Your Home’s Next Buyer Won’t Hate One of These 5 Colors

Most real estate experts recommend painting your home with neutral colors before selling it. This is because not only can doing so increase its mass market appeal but also potentially increase its value!

So by all means feel free to paint your next place Gen Z Purple or Millennial Pink when you move in. But when it’s time to list your current property try one of these categories of neutral paint colors.

You might not love ‘em but chances are they’ll blend into the background enough so that your next buyer will be able to truly reflect on what they love about your home and maybe even see themselves in it.

You’ve Been Told to Use Neutral Colors. But Why?

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. And when selling your home the impression buyers get matters a lot. Enough in fact to keep buyers interested or turn them away.

That’s probably why Realtor.com recommends “breaking up with your house” before selling it which includes everything from de-cluttering to painting over that bright shade of Mustard yellow in your kitchen.

But painting your home with neutral colors is about more than removing your personal touches. Doing so also can have these benefits:

  • Appeal to More Buyers: It’s less that your buyer will fall head-over-heels in love with the linen white or taupe you paint your space before selling and more that they’ll be better able to visualize themselves in the space without a bright color distracting them.
  • Brighten and Expand the Space: Both warm neutral paint colors and cool neutral paint colors can help brighten a space and make it feel bigger. That’s because light reflects better off light colors than dark ones. Here’s another tip worth trying: Not only should you opt for a neutral, but also a less saturated color. Need help picking one? • Provide a Calming Influence: The last thing you want is to stress out potential home buyers. According to Fixr’s Paint and Color Trends Report 2024, that’s exactly what colors like red, lime green, and yellow can do. Covering over these shades, especially with warm neutrals, can be incredibly impactful.

Choose One of These Neutral Paint Colors for Your Living Room, Bathroom, or Bedroom Mini Makeover

Before you list your home for sale, be sure to have it professionally painted in one of these bright and modern neutrals or something similar. If you need help choosing, we’ve got you covered!

1. Warm Whites

From warm but bright whites like Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace to warm and creamy whites like Benjamin Moore’s Linen White, a warm white can add brightness and comfort to any space while keeping it palatable for buyers.

If you’re concerned about things looking sterile with a white, try pairing it with an accent wall of another neutral but more saturated color like a rich cocoa or greige.

2. Warm Beiges

Cool grays are out for 2024 and 2025. Warm beiges like Sherwin William’s Accessible Beige and Softer Tan are decidedly in! More importantly, they are sure to lend a comfy feel to any space.

3. Warm Greiges

Greiges sometimes get a bad rap for being muddy. But if you’re looking for neutral bedroom paint colors or living room paint colors that aren’t quite as yellowy or warm as tan but aren’t quite as cool as a true gray, then a greige like Sherwin Williams’ Worldly Gray or Behr’s appropriately named Greige might be the perfect choice.

4. Soft Greens or Blues

While most real estate experts wouldn’t recommend painting an area as large as a main living room or kitchen green or blue, if you’re looking for soft and serene paint colors for a bathroom or bedroom that are inoffensive, one of these hues could work.

While more neutral bathroom paint colors or bedroom paint colors like cream or greige might be a safer choice, the right soft green or blue could lend a calming and spa-like feel to a master bedroom or guest bath. Try one of these:

  • Benjamin Moore’s October Mist
  • Farrow and Ball’s Green Smoke
  • Sherwin Williams Calico
  • Sherwin William’s Upward

5. Earthy Tones

Earthy tones like forest green, soft brown, and terracotta are all in.

While these types of colors wouldn’t be our first choice to paint your home before selling, especially given that some can be on the more saturated site, here are a few more muted earthy tones that might be good choices if you just don’t want to use a white, greige, or tan or if you’re selling in a market with a younger buyer base trendier colors will be expected:

  • Behr’s Moleskin a warm earthy brown
  • Benjamin Moore’s Antique Coral a lighter variation on Terra Cotta
  • Behr’s Laurel Tree
