How Often Should I Paint The Exterior Of My House

Painting your house’s interior or exterior can be an exciting time as it can completely change the look and feel of your whole house! Painting a room or two inside your home is a pretty big task; however, tackling the entire exterior of your house is quite the challenge. That’s why it’s good to know how often you should be applying a new coat of paint so you can keep your home’s outer walls looking their best.

Exterior House Material

There is no set timeline or rule for how often you should apply a fresh coat of paint to the outside of your house. It is one of those scenarios that is different for every home, depending on several elements. The material of which the exterior of your house is made is one factor that gives clues as to how often it requires maintenance:

  • Wood: Should require a fresh coat of paint every three to seven years, or a fresh stain approximately every four years.
  • Aluminum: Should require a fresh paint job every five years.
  • Stucco: Should require a fresh paint job every five to six years.
  • Brick: Can go the longest without requiring a new paint job, up to 15 to 20 years.
  • Newer materials such as cement fiberboard: Can go 10 to 15 years before a fresh paint job.

Weather Conditions

Climate and weather conditions play a significant role in exterior house maintenance. Since we are based out of Philadelphia with intense heat and snow, it’s important to have consistently well painted and protected outer walls. The hot sun can cause fading and bubbles, and the snow can cause damage and allow the cold to enter your home. Keeping an eye out for these issues can help determine when the next coat of paint is necessary or approximately how much longer your current coat will last.

Paint Quality and Preparation

Durable paint and a highly trained team of painting professionals likely mean the job will turn out better and last longer. With 15 years of painting experience under our belts, we can guarantee you will never have been happier with the exterior look of your home.

Additionally, preparation beforehand is an important step that can make all the difference. At Groovy Hues Painting Painting & Power Washing of Greater Philadelphia, we offer pressure washing to eliminate any mildew or dirt spots that may have accumulated over time. Skipping this step means the new coat of paint would have to go over top, affecting the overall color and resulting in an uneven or spotty paint job.
